چکیده

Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) is a pre-compensation method, which is exactly fitted to the channel impulse response in order to completely compensate for its linear impairments, and it is in-fact a generalization of partial response precoding. THP is very popular in the field of wireless communications, namely in multi-input multi-output (MIMO) scenarios. It offers an alternative to the decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) with the possibility to apply channel coding conjunctively. In this paper, the compatibility of THP with fiber-optic communication systems is investigated. Different configurations of THP are considered and compared with DFE by means of performance and complexity. Results are examined for 4QAM modulation, where the length of the transmission link and the number of equalizer coefficients are varied. In addition, the effect of the receiver filter’s bandwidth on the performance of THP is evaluated. In the second step, possible scenarios for using THP in a fiber-optic system, as well as challenges, which result from properties of the system and equalizer, are addressed and discussed.

Combined Precoding and Volterra Equalization for the Mitigation of Fiber-Optic Nonlinear Channel Impairments

We investigate the performance of a combined Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP) and a Volterra nonlinear equalization (VNLE) in a nonlinear fiber-optic communication system aiming at a data rate of 100 Gbits/sec. THP-VNLE is compared with a feed-forward VNLE and a combined VNLE decision-feedback equalizer (DFE) by means of performance and computational complexity. Two different transmission sc...

Implementation aspects of nonlinear precoding for G.fast - coding and legacy receivers

Hybrid copper/fiber networks bridge the gap between the fiber link at the distribution point and the customer by using copper wires over the last meters. The G.fast technology has been designed to be used in such a fiber to the distribution point (FTTdp) network. Crosstalk management using MIMO precoding is a key to the required performance of FTTdp. With higher frequencies used on copper wires...

Vector Precoding for Wireless MIMO Systems: A Replica Analysis

We apply the replica method to analyze vector precoding, a method to reduce transmit power in antenna array communications. The analysis applies to a very general class of channel matrices. The statistics of the channel matrix enter the transmitted energy per symbol via its R-transform. We find that vector precoding performs much better for complex than for real alphabets. As a byproduct, we fi...

Double-Rate Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding for Multi-Valued Data Transmission

The growing demand for high-speed data communication has continued to meet the need for ever-increasing I/O bandwidth in recent VLSI systems. However, signal integrity issues, such as intersymbol interference (ISI) and reflections, make the channel band-limited at high-speed data rates. We propose high-speed data transmission techniques for VLSI systems using Tomlinson-Harashima precoding (THP)...

Lattice-Reduction-Aided Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding for Point-to-Multipoint Transmission

A new version of Tomlinson-Harashima Precoding (THP) for multiple-input/multiple-output (MIMO) channels with decentralised receivers employing lattice reduction is introduced. The proposed method clearly outperforms linear equalisation and conventional THP and in particular shows full diversity order.
